Set your truck pay, margin and bill rate

Last updated: October 19, 2026

Rate Breakdown starts from DAT's truck pay, adds your margin, and gives you the Bill Rate that goes in your reply. You can change any piece of it.

Rate Breakdown

Adjust the numbers

  • Truck Pay starts at the DAT rate. Enter it as Flat or Per Mile. If you already know what it'll take to cover the load, type over it.
  • Margin is added on top. Every quote starts at $525 flat until you save your own default. Switch between a dollar amount and a percentage any time.
  • Bill Rate updates as you go. To quote an exact number, say a round $2,800, click it and type.

Save your default margin

$525 flat is just a starting point, and it won't fit every lane. On a short haul it's a big share of the rate; on a long haul it's thin. Many reps prefer a percentage, which scales with the lane. Pick what fits your book and save it.

  1. Set the margin you usually quote, like 15% or $400.
  2. Click the lightbulb icon next to Margin. It reads Click to save … as default profit.
  3. You'll see Updated! Every new quote now starts there.
Save your margin as the default

Your default is yours alone. It doesn't change anyone else's quotes.

Fuel and miles

Click Show fuel details to see how fuel is worked out. Fuel comes from DAT by default, with DOE (the weekly government diesel price) as a backup. You can switch between them, change the number, or pick which mileage to use.

Fuel details

A fuel number you type applies to that quote only. If a customer doesn't pay fuel surcharge, set fuel to $0 on their quotes.

FAQs

Can I save a fuel number as my default?

Not yet. Fuel starts fresh on every quote, and anything you type applies to that quote only.

Can I change my default later?

Yes. Set a new margin and click the lightbulb again. The new number becomes your default. To go back to where you started, set $525 flat and save it.

Does my default apply to Batch Quote too?

Yes. Each lane in a batch starts from your default margin, and you can change lanes one at a time or all together.

I changed the bill rate. Will the reply update?

Yes. Whatever you land on in Rate Breakdown is what goes into the draft reply.
